Muriel Hassell Helton

Muriel Hassell Helton of Cullman, Alabama, passed away on September 20, 2022, at the age of 96. Ms. Helton was born in Cullman County, Alabama, on January 19, 1926, to J.C. and Eva Gorham Hassell.

Muriel was a people person, and she loved the many friends she made over the forty-six years she worked in shoe sales at Patrick’s Shoe Store in Cullman. She also loved her church family at Oak Level Baptist Church where she was a member for many years. Muriel was a member of the Holly Pond Homemakers Club and had many dear friends there as well. As much as Ms. Helton enjoyed her many friendships, her family was always the most important part of her life. Muriel was always elated to spend time with her children and their families. Ms. Helton will be missed greatly by those who knew and loved her.

Ms. Helton is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Lee Helton; parents, J.C. and Eva Hassell; son-in-law, Jerry Sullins; four brothers, two sister-in-laws; and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include her son, Bruce Helton; daughter, Polly Sullins; grandchildren, Derrick (Dianna) Lovell, Delisa Sullins, Renita Cook; great-grandchildren, Gail (Will) Huggins, Kristina Fletcher, Brett Lovell, Joshua Lovell, Amber Calvert; great-great-grandchildren, Alyssa Huggins, Amaya Heflin, Makayla Heflin, Carter Huggins, Liam Huggins; great-great-great- grandson, Kayden Huggins; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Ms. Helton are 11:30 a.m., Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Oak Level Baptist Church, Bro. Etsel Riddle officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Pond Cemetery where Allan Scott, Jonathan Franklin, Derrick Lovell, Steve Parker, Kelvin Veal, and Kyle Kirkwood will serve as pallbearers. Friends are invited to join the family for a time of visitation on Saturday morning, at the church, from 10 a.m., until services begin.
