Stanley Robert Cowley
December 8, 1950 – October 8, 2026
Stanley Robert Cowley, lovingly known as Stan, passed away on October 8, 2026, in Holly Pond, Alabama, at the age of 75. Born on December 8, 1950, in Dixon, Illinois, Stan moved to Washington State at the age of 13. He lived in Washington for 48 years before starting over in Alabama.
Football was more than a pastime for Stan; it was a passion. He devoted 32 years to football officiating, a commitment that became a defining part of his life. For Stan, the game was something worth giving his time, energy, and dedication to. His years on the field reflected the same commitment and strong sense of responsibility that he carried into every part of his life. Football held a special place in his heart, and those 32 years were a significant part of the story he leaves behind.
Stan built a career in the kitchen, where his talent and love for cooking led him to establish a wonderful catering business. He was most famous for his Cesar salad dressing. He later worked in Telecommunications for 15 years. His final career was as a cashier with Publix, where he continued working and serving others in a different capacity.
During his many years in Washington, Stan enjoyed fishing and spent most years hunting deer and elk. These outdoor pursuits were among the things he loved, giving him opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and follow his interests. He also loved singing in the church choir and remained committed to the things that brought meaning and enjoyment to his life.
Above all, Stan loved the Lord and openly shared his faith with others. His Christian faith was an important part of who he was, and he was never afraid to speak about what he believed. His faith was a foundation in his life and an important part of the legacy he leaves to his family and all who knew him.
After moving to Alabama, Stan found a special place at the Holly Pond Senior Center. He enjoyed the camaraderie and friendly competition of a good game of dominoes or bingo and was always ready to challenge someone to play cribbage. Stan loved a good conversation, especially when it involved politics, investments, or a new way to cook a piece of meat. He had opinions, enjoyed sharing them, and could always find something worth discussing.
Those who knew Stan knew that his word meant something. Commitment was everything to him, and when he gave his word, he meant it. He was also famously stubborn, especially when faced with health challenges. Though the challenges sometimes slowed him down, they rarely persuaded him to give up the things he loved. It was hard to get Stan to stop doing something that mattered to him. His determination, strong convictions, and unmistakable personality were simply part of who he was.
Stan leaves behind his children, Sara (Brett), Rene (Jeff), and James, and his eight grandchildren: Sterling, Reagan, Boone, Scarlett, Case, Malachi, Meier, and Merritt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Dorothy Cowley.
His family and friends will remember his passion, his stubborn determination, his love for the Lord, and his commitment to his word. Though his absence will be deeply felt, the memories he leaves behind and the faith he shared so openly will continue to be part of his family’s story.
May those who loved Stan find comfort in the promises of God and the hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Celebration of life will be held at 5pm on October 13th, 2026 at Temple Baptist Church, Cullman campus.
